Near Leesburg, Virginia, since 1828, a ferry crosses the Potamac River. It is well worth the detour and the toll ($3 one-way) to step back in history. The links tell of the location and history...

On the Virgina side, the road to the ferry is on a narrow, winding road through the woods... and turns upon itself down to the river (below).
